Tiled Reverie: Taiwan’s Tile Heritage Finds New Life Through Fashion and Art in London

by Lavish Staff

Presented during London Design Festival 2026, “Tiled Reverie” brings Taiwan’s richly colored decorative tile traditions into contemporary fashion and fine art through the work of BOO and multidisciplinary artist Yung Hsuan Wang.

From Architecture to the Body

What happens when a blessing leaves the wall and begins to move with the body?

That question sits at the heart of “Tiled Reverie,” an exhibition presented during London Design Festival 2026 that explores Taiwan’s decorative tile heritage through contemporary fashion and art.

A collaboration between Taiwanese fashion label BOO and London-based Taiwanese artist Yung Hsuan Wang, also known as Walkthecatt, the exhibition reimagines traditional tile motifs through original graphic textile prints, artworks, vivid color, and wearable forms.

Held from September 12–16 at 65A Charlotte Street, London, the exhibition transforms a visual language traditionally associated with architecture into something intimate, contemporary, and mobile.

Symbols of Everyday Life

Decorative tiles became widely visible across Taiwan during the early twentieth century, bringing richly colored floral, geometric, and auspicious motifs into homes and architectural spaces.

Beyond their decorative function, these patterns carried meanings associated with hope, prosperity, happiness, and protection. Their placement within everyday environments turned architecture itself into a vessel for cultural wishes and blessings.

“Tiled Reverie” considers what happens when those symbols are removed from their original architectural context and translated into a contemporary visual and fashion language.

BOO’s fashion pieces place these motifs onto the body, while Wang’s original artworks offer another interpretation of the same cultural vocabulary. Together, the works create a dialogue between historical imagery, artistic memory, graphic composition, and contemporary design.

A Living Cultural Language

The exhibition sits at the intersection of heritage and contemporary practice, reflecting broader conversations around craft revival, new technologies, and the reinterpretation of cultural traditions through modern materials and forms.

For BOO and Wang, the movement from architecture to the body becomes a way of examining how symbols rooted in a particular place can travel across time and borders.

The result is not simply a preservation of traditional imagery, but an exploration of how those visual codes can acquire new meanings when encountered through fashion, fine art, and contemporary design.

Yung Hsuan Wang

Based in London, Taiwanese multidisciplinary artist Yung Hsuan Wang — Walkthecatt / 遛貓 works across collage, watercolor, oil pastel, and colored pencil.

Her practice draws from everyday objects, dining-table scenes, and elements of nature, using color, texture, and collage to explore relationships between people, objects, and memory.

For “Tiled Reverie,” her work provides an artistic counterpart to BOO’s fashion pieces, expanding the exhibition’s exploration of cultural memory beyond the garment.

BOO

Founded in 2022 by Taiwanese fashion designer Bao Wen Chen, BOO is rooted in a fascination with color and print. The brand collects and reinterprets flowers, vintage imagery, memories, and cultural references through bold compositions and original textile prints.

Its approach transforms familiar imagery into narrative-driven fashion, creating contemporary silhouettes around prints that function as visual stories.

With “Tiled Reverie,” that philosophy extends into Taiwan’s decorative tile heritage, connecting historical patterns with a new generation of wearable design.
